SFIFF52: Next Frame Picks for 5/4

mesrine

Jacques Mesrine was one of the most famous criminals of France, a man whose career of bank robberies, kidnappings, and prison escapes frustrated the National Police for so long — over 20 years — that they only ended it by carrying out a spectacular assassination, as if to put an end to their embarrassment. Jean-Francois Richet’s epic two-part biopic, Mesrine, Part 1 and Mesrine, Part 2, are playing at the Clay theater on Monday 5/4 in back-to-back screenings starting at 6:15. The two parts have gotten very positive reviews overall, and it sounds like a white-knuckle thriller all the way through. The two films feature a great cast, too: in addition to Vincent Cassel in the title role (pictured above), Gerard Depardieu, Mathieu Almaric, and Ludivine Sagnier have large roles. Definitely worth checking out if epic crime films are your thing — and who doesn’t have a thing for epic crime films?

If you can’t make Part 1 because it’s screening too early on a Monday, you can also catch it at the Clay today at 6:15. There’s one more screening of Part 2 on March 6th and 9:00.

If you didn’t catch New Muslim Cool before, Monday at 6:30 is your last chance to check it out. It’s the doc about a new generation of Latino and African-American Muslims that generated so much buzz last week.
