lessons
I have had about 10 years of experience teaching fiddle, piano and guitar to both children and adults, from beginners to intermediate players. I can teach you to play by ear, and I can also teach you to read music on all three instruments. In all cases my lessons emphasize making music, improvising, and having fun. You’ll find that studying with me is a lot of fun, and I’ll help you go farther on your instrument than you ever thought possible.
I have been exploring the world of music for over twenty years. I started off on the piano as a kid and was classically trained, eventually taking eight years of lessons and entering piano competitions. Although one year I worked as an accompanist at a ballet school, ultimately I went in other directions with my music, studying, writing and performing in jazz and pop styles.
I picked up the classical guitar when I was in my early twenties and living on the road in Mexico, the southwest, and Colorado. I wanted to keep making music during my travels, and it’s a little hard to take a piano along on a road trip! Ultimately I played guitar very seriously for over four years, eventually recording a CD of lute music that had been transcribed for guitar.
In the past half-decade I’ve been studying folk styles on the fiddle with various teachers around the Bay Area. So far I have specialized in traditional Irish music and in Eastern European and Klezmer music, but my basic technique is closer to that of a classical player, owing to some early lessons I took with a classical teacher.
I play all three of these instruments almost every day (the fiddle more than others, lately) and I love sharing my knowledge with my students.
